It’s very rare that Jon and I can get away for a date night. Date days are possible but at night it’s more difficult. But we struck a bit of luck on the eve of a follow-up procedure for Jon and my mom would already have Aubrey at her house for a few nights. We dropped Luke off with my in-laws and we headed out to Senses on Main – a street fair every third Thursday in Downtown Newhall. We attended one a year ago with some friends and our little ones and had a blast. There’s always a few food trucks, a live band, and plenty of shops to visit. With both kids having fun, we set off on our own.
Downtown Newhall has been on a multi year plan to revitalize and create a trendy environment. Trendy as in a cool place to hang out for dinner, grab a drink, or walk around. One of the latest restaurants to open up is the Newhall Refinery. We have heard so many good things about it and I’ve seen a ton of photos on Instagram of local peeps checking it out and snapping pics of their grub & beers. The restaurant was really packed when we put our name in and walked across the street to the Pulchella Winery. Except before I actually ordered my flight of wine, we were called back to the restaurant to eat right by the chef’s station. We overlooked the kitchen and it was great to see all the variety of items they offer being prepped, cooked, and served. The beer menu is extensive and we decided to try a flight of some of them to figure out what we’d order. I decided on a Hef that isn’t shown on the menu online. And I can’t remember what it was called. But it was good. They offer beer in 4oz, 12oz, and 16oz servings. Great options if you’d like to try a few without filling up too quickly. For our meal, I went with the Craft Burger. Everyone we ran into that night (at Pulchella and Ma Maison) said it was the best item on the menu. I have to agree it was damn tasty. Jon ordered the Shepherd’s Sliders and we shared a Baby Spinach Salad and the Mac N Cheese. Holy wow! Everything was delicious. The Mac N Cheese was amazing and it might be even better than my favorite one from Panera. While we waited for our food we were discussing how great the decor is in the joint. There are lots of images with great lighting of different snapshots of what you might find at a refinery. You have to check it out!
Once we left Newhall Refinery, the live band was on a break. We walked around a bit and ended up at Ma Maison. If you’re needing a great set of options for a gift, you must check them out. We chatted with the owner a bit and then walked next door to Pulchella Winery to get that flight of wine I was wanting to try earlier.
Jon and I chatted with the owners’ wives while we were there and found out a bit about the vineyard, and enjoyed learning about the different wines they offer. I loved their 2011 cab as it had the deep flavor of a cab, but had a softer taste like a pinot. I grabbed a bottle to enjoy at home too. The place is decorated with great artwork and offers space to sit at bar tables or lounge in sofa chairs. It was a great way to end our night!
If you’re in the area, add a trip to Senses on Main (third thursday of each month!) to experience a great part of Downtown Newhall!
