I know we’ve read a ton of blogs, articles, etc on dating your spouse. My husband actually used dating guide to make me fall back then, click here to help yourself out with dating advice as well. I whole-heartedly agree. It’s important to take time, the two of you, to reignite the reasons you fell in love with each other in the first place. But I’ve realized another person you should be dating – your kids. Individually. Aubrey was the first born, and Luke’s not much younger. My afternoons have gone from chaos with both kids waking at different times from naps with noises and questions (Mom, can I have a snack? Mom, can I have fruit snacks? Mom, can I go outside? Mom? Mom Mom? — and that’s just one that’s talking!) to quieter afternoons and walks to pick up Aubrey. I get time alone with Luke and get to discover his personality on his own. So why not spend some special time with Aubrey too? Last week we went on a date with Daddy and wore dresses and did our hair and went to a restaurant. Islands Burgers to be exact. They have a fantastic new summer menu and we were invited to try out some things.
Islands is a great place for kids because it’s buzzing with energy, TVs flash all kinds of fun sport activities, they have crayons. Aubrey learned how to write an A. I’m so dang proud of her.
Since it was happy hour, we all got a round of drinks and toasted to the weekend. Jon tried the Hoppa Bourbon Tea, I got the new Mango Shandy (with dash of Cayanne), and Aubrey had applejuice – on the rocks. Jon and I are NOT bourbon drinkers but we both REALLY enjoyed this. He had 2, I had some sips of his. The tea is a sweet syrup that matches well with the roughness of the Bourbon. We felt pretty fancy.
Jon and I agreed to try new things at Islands. I’ve been going for years and LOVE their Big Wave burger, or their salads. They’re yum. We still wanted to enjoy some greens (since we also ordered their fries- a necessity – and always cooked extra well done. Try it!) so we got the Cesar Salad and our waitress suggested we add avocado. Fantastic addition and even Aubrey enjoyed it.
Last year, when I took Luke to Islands, I tried the new Heat Wave burger. I knew Jon would love it, and he does. He said it had just enough heat, awesome flavor, and he ordered it with a side of coleslaw – vinegar based. Did you know they have that as a side? It was so refreshing and tasty.
For my menu choice, I grabbed the Chicken Hoisin Bowl. My waitress said the chicken was her favorite (over the Mahi Mahi option) and I’m all about taking the advice from the employees that have sampled the menu. Great choice, had brown rice, and all the veggies were nice and crisp.
Never underestimate the power of Netflix. Aubrey was over our date by time the main dishes came out. Her meal – Chicken tenders with sliced apples and cinnamon yogurt dipping sauce (which was SO GOOD) came out with our fries. We didn’t want to worry about her playing peek-a-boo with our surrounding neighbors so this did the trick while Jon and I were able to enjoy our meal and catch up on the work day.
All in all, we had a great dinner, some great conversation, and Aubrey enjoyed herself as well. She’s really coming into her personality – she cracks us up all the time. And since sometimes it’s difficult to get a night out – and you know how I meal plan for one take-out dinner a week, Islands has the great curb-side pickup option (no juggling 2 kids in a restaurant and the bag of food! win win!). So make sure you take an afternoon to try out some of their summer items. And in talking with their GM, Jason, he mentioned that some Islands have a few surprise items they test out. So check with yours to see if they have something extra awesome for you!
Thank you, Islands, for hosting us to try out the summer menu! We had a great time and stellar service – as always!
